How often should your equipment be examined?
These are the intervals recognised as good practice internationally (LOLER and PUWER in the UK, LEEA guidance, EN 365, NFPA and manufacturers’ instructions). Your operator’s rules, Iraqi regulations or the equipment manufacturer may ask for shorter intervals, and those always come first. A competent person should also examine equipment after installation, after major repair and after any event that could affect its safety.
| Equipment | Typical interval | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Equipment that lifts people (man baskets, MEWPs, personnel hoists) | Every 6 months | Thorough examination, function tests, certificate and colour tag |
| Lifting accessories (slings, shackles, hooks, chain blocks, spreader beams, eyebolts) | Every 6 months | Visual and dimensional checks, load testing where needed, register update |
| Other lifting equipment (cranes, hoists, winches, lifting frames) | Every 12 months, or by a written scheme of examination | Thorough examination, load test to 500 t, NDT of critical parts |
| Forklifts, side booms, loaders, excavators, HIAB, trailers and tankers | Every 12 months for the lifting parts, plus pre-use checks every shift | Third-party inspection to client and operator checklists, defect reports |
| Pressure systems, relief valves, gauges and transmitters | As set in the written scheme or calibration plan, commonly 12 months | Calibration, bench testing of relief valves, hydrostatic and pneumatic tests |
| Harnesses, lanyards and lifelines | Detailed inspection at least every 12 months, every 6 months under heavy use, and before every use by the user | Inspection against EN 365 and the maker’s instructions, removal of failed items |
| Scaffolds | Before first use, at least every 7 days, and after bad weather or alteration | Inspection, scaff-tag system, inspection register |
| OCTG, drill pipe and BHA | Per API, DS-1 category and client specification | Visual, EMI, UT and MPI inspection, thread gauging, before and after repair reports |
| Fire extinguishers and fire pumps | Monthly visual checks, annual maintenance, weekly and annual pump tests (NFPA 10 and NFPA 25) | Inspection, testing and maintenance contracts to Civil Defence standards |
| Portable gas detectors | Bump test before daily use, calibration typically monthly or per manufacturer | Calibration with certified gas, certificates for every unit |
