HSE Resources and Safety Guides
Straight answers to the questions our trainers and inspectors hear every week, from choosing the right NEBOSH course to keeping your lifting gear certified.
Choosing a qualification
Which should I take first: NEBOSH IGC or IOSH Managing Safely?
IOSH Managing Safely is a short course for supervisors and managers who need to manage risks in their team. NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) is a deeper professional qualification and the usual first step for anyone who wants a career as an HSE officer. Many learners take IOSH first and NEBOSH IGC next.
What level is the NEBOSH International Diploma?
The NEBOSH International Diploma is a Level 6 qualification, equivalent in level to a UK bachelor’s degree. It is aimed at HSE professionals who want to lead safety in larger organisations. Quality World is a NEBOSH Gold Learning Partner (no. 1751).
I studied law, English or economics. Can I still pass NEBOSH?
Yes. Many of our NEBOSH graduates come from non-engineering backgrounds such as law, translation, education and economics, and now work as HSE supervisors and specialists in Iraq’s energy sector.
Are your certificates recognised in Iraq and abroad?
International certificates are issued by the awarding body itself, such as NEBOSH, IOSH or CQI and IRCA. Quality World is also an authorised training centre of the Iraqi Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, so our certificates can be attested in Iraq and at Iraqi embassies.
How can an employer check a certificate?
Enter the certificate code on our certificate verification page. International certificates can also be checked directly with the awarding body.
Keeping equipment safe and certified
What is a thorough examination?
A thorough examination is a systematic, detailed check of lifting equipment by a competent person, sometimes with load tests or NDT, to find defects before they become dangerous. It ends with a written report and certificate.
How often must lifting equipment be inspected?
As international good practice, equipment that lifts people and all lifting accessories every 6 months, and other lifting equipment every 12 months, unless a written scheme or your operator sets other intervals. See our inspection intervals table.
How often should a safety harness be inspected?
The user checks it before every use. A competent person should carry out a detailed inspection at least every 12 months, and every 6 months when it is used heavily or in harsh conditions.
How often should portable gas detectors be calibrated?
Bump test before each day’s use, and calibrate as the manufacturer says, typically every month on oil and gas sites.
What does an NFPA 20 fire pump set include?
Usually a main pump (electric or diesel), a jockey pump that keeps the network pressurised, controllers, valves and headers, and often a pressure tank. We supply, install, test and maintain the full set.
For companies and contractors
How long does ISO 9001 certification take?
For a small or medium company, usually a few months: gap analysis, documentation, implementation, internal audit and management review, then the certification audit. We guide you through each step.
What do Iraqi oil companies ask for in vendor registration?
Typically company registration documents, HSE policy and plan, quality documents, ISO certificates where available, proof of competent staff and past work. We prepare complete prequalification packs.
Can you train our team on our own site?
Yes. We deliver in-house courses at your site or camp anywhere in Iraq, in Arabic or English, or host your team at our Basra centre.
